Green Grass Farms is a partnership between Marlin Martin of Marita Fields and Jared James of Timberline Farm. We are farmers that believe good and healthy food comes from healthy farmland that is managed naturally. In nature every ecosystem is home to both plants and animals that thrive together so we model our farms around this fact of life. Our fields are used to grow grass and in these fields we raise our cows, pigs and chickens to create a real and functional ecosystem. These ecosystems allow us to harvest healthy meats that we can share with all of you at the same time as providing habitat to our native wildlife. Everything from amphibians and birds to wildflowers and their pollinators can thrive alongside our livestock our pastures.
Marita Fields is the home farm of Marlin Martin and his family. Marlin is part of Southern Ontario’s Mennonite community and farming is in his blood. When it comes to raising livestock there isn’t anything he hasn’t done. He grew up raising chickens and milking cows. For years he worked as a farrier, shoeing horses that pull carriages. Now, at Marita fields, he raises grass fed beef, milking goats, pasture raised chicken, turkeys and pork, as well as breeding working horses. Marlin has made a lifelong effort to learn how best to raise animals regeneratively and his farm puts that knowledge into practice. He has become a well respected person in the Mennonite community and many young community member look to him for advice and partnership when it comes to raising livestock themselves.
Timberline Farm is the home farm of Jared James, you can call him Farmer Jared and he is who you’ll be talking to when you contact Green Grass Farms. Jared has focused his farm on regeneratively raising 100% grass fed beef. To him, farming has been an opportunity to live a life that truly reflect his values of animal welfare and nature conservation. Timberline Farm has specialized in Farm to Table sales, the only way to buy their beef is directly from the farm and demand for the beef just keeps growing. Now, with Marlin’s help, Green Grass Farms will meet that demand.
Jared and Marlin got to know each other at their local hay and straw auction yard. Think of the hay and straw auction like the water cooler in an office building. Farmers go there to do business but it’s also a place where farmers can get to know the other people in their community and chat over a cup of coffee. After getting to know each other over the years, Jared and Marlin realized they could work together to create something neither of them could do on their own. With Marlin’s expertise in raising livestock and Jared’s experience building a Farm to Table beef business from the ground up they partnered to create Green Grass Farms to provide sustainable meats delivered directly to the consumer. Being a Mennonite, Marlin does not use cell phones or computers, which is why Jared is who you’ll be talking to when you call or email Green Grass farms. Both Marlin and Jared are very exited to be putting sustainably raised and healthy meats into your freezer and onto you table. We thank you for supporting Green Grass Farms.
Our Pigs free to roam a large field where they have everything they need to be happy and healthy. They can root around in the dirt, wallow in the mud hole, relax in the shade and run in the sun. As well as the grass and plant roots that they eat in the field they are fed a non GMO mix of grains to help them grow the best they can.
Our cows are are 100% grass fed and finished. That means that throughout their entire lives they only eat grass, no grains at all, ever. In the summer they graze fresh grass in the pastures and in the winter they are fed hay. Hay is grass that is cut and harvested in the summer and stored away to feed the cows when pastures are dormant for the winter.
Our Chickens are raised in what we call “Chicken Tractors.” These are outdoor enclosures that are light enough to be moved easily onto a fresh patch of grass every day and secure enough to keep the chickens safe from predators. In these chicken tractors they have fresh water to drink and feed to peck at in addition to the grass.
It’s not just a saying here at Green Grass Farms, all our meats are shipped directly from our farm to your door. There is no middleman, when you order you are ordering directly from the farm and talking to the farmer.
